NEW Chaos Daemons have arrived !

Games Workshop have put their new WFB and 40K Daemons on "Pre-orders".

They certainly look interesting and suitably Daemonic !

The news release from GW:-

New Daemons Available to Pre-Order
To earn the ire of a Daemon is to sign your own death warrant. Gruesome warriors and fiends all, each of the entities that make up their ranks is a fragment of its patron god given form. They are as immortal as time itself and as powerful as the roiling emotions they embody...

Ready to pre-order today are ghoulish treats for all collectors of both Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer miniatures. Chaos Daemons, also known as Daemons of Chaos in the Warhammer world, receive a host of mind-bogglingly brilliant new miniatures in plastic and Citadel Finecast, as well as a new Codex and Army Book, both of which come in a limited edition format.

First up: in a collection of stomach-churning creations, it takes something especially hideous such as the Plague Drones of Nurgle to stand out. On each model, a Plaguebearer sits atop an enormous Rot Fly, which is covered in horrific details. This is a must-have for anyone who wishes to please the Dark Gods in a particularly grim manner.

But even more mind-boggling plastic delights await the collector...
The Blood Throne of Khorne can also make a Skull Cannon of Khorne - both are industrious creations, hybrids of flesh and daemon engine. Meanwhile the Burning Chariot of Tzeentch also provides the modeller with a large number of options: either a Herald of Tzeentch or Exalted Flamer can stand atop a large ornate disc, while blue horrors ooze ahead of a bubbling sea of warpflame. Finally, in plastic, comes the Herald of Nurgle. There is also a Herald of Khorne and Herald of Slaanesh, both of which are available in our premium Citadel Finecast resin. All of the miniatures are available for use in both Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer collections.
To accompany these new releases come the hardcover Codex: Chaos Daemons and the new Army Book -Warhammer: Daemons of Chaos. Both books are available in limited edition format, which come with a special matt dust-jacket featuring a gloss illustration, one for each god. Underneath, the hardcover finish is soft touch with subtle artwork, and includes a black ribbon bookmark, black edging and a individually numbered certificate.

You'll need to hit that buy button soon, as all of the variants are available in strictly limited quantities...

The books contain the same information as the standard editions - a rich and vivid background to the Daemons and their patron gods, army lists to arrange your collection into a battle-ready force, and showcases of expertly painted Citadel miniatures. For those of you who wish to swipe your way through the galleries, the digital editions of Codex: Chaos Daemons and Warhammer: Daemons of Chaos are available to pre-order on the iBookstore right now. Go!

Finally, available for you to pre-order on games-workshop.com are two sets of cards - Warhammer 40,000 Psychic Cards: Chaos Daemons and Warhammer Battle Magic: Daemons of Chaos, for use in your tabletop games. Both are available in strictly limited numbers - get your orders in before they sell out. "

Interview with a Fantasy Army Designer

Mathias has created an impressive range of 20 very unique and inspiring unofficial Warhammer Fantasy Battle army books, expansions and supplements.

With the speed at which Mathias manages to turn around new and updated armies I'm amazed he found the time to respond to my interview request. Mathias is so productive that I once thought he didn't bother with sleep, eating (or going to the toilet!) However, given how quickly he is delivering remarkable army books of increasing quality I no longer believe those things. Now I think he slows time (with the help of Teclis maybe ?) or possibly uses the Chaos Warp Gates ! Muahaha !

You can find links to all of Mathias' wonderful creations on his Warhammer Armies Project blog plus all his development plans, news and updates.

The Battle Reporter forum also hosts the army book pdf links (incl discussion threads) plus some other non-Mathias creations.

I thought it was high time we got the the bottom of the genius of Mathias, the preeminent Fantasy Battle Army book developer. So, say hello to Mathias....

Sigmar: Where did your interest in Warhammer Fantasy Battle stem from ?

- I guess it started around 2001. I was just 11 at the time, and began to become deeply enthralled by fantasy with the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Narnia and Artemis Fowl series. I actually even began writing my own book (which did become rather similar to Harry Potter after a while...), though I only got around 30 pages in before finding something more interesting to do I guess. Then my cousin introduced me to the LotR miniatures in 2004, which pretty soon had me hooked. After I spent the better part of a year building a replica of the siege of Minas Tirith, I eventually moved onto Warhammer in 2005.

Sigmar: Which army did you first collect and can you recall any of your first battles and what happened ?

- My first army was (and still is) a Bretonnian army painted like the English in the movie Braveheart. What I can remember from my first battles (aside from not really understanding the rules all that well!) is that I defeated my friend's Tomb Kings army 6 times in a row. Then we started to understand the rules and gameplay better, and he consequently beat me 10 times in a row before things started to even out again. Before this, we had all kinds of crazy rules going on, like the Bretonnians losing a whole turn of the game if praying, and Tomb Kings magic being almost twice as effective as is was supposed to. Now that I think about it, almost all the rules we were wrong about was to my friend's benefit... not that that matters anymore with my terrible dice rolls! Maybe that's why I mostly stick to making rules rather than playing?

Sigmar: What inspired you to begin creating your own rules and army books ?

I actually started making army lists all the way back in 2005-2006. I wrote 30 pages or so of army lists to use my LotR models in Warhammer. I do remember playing without any turn or overrun limits in this case, which resulted in the Witch King killing off an entire army by himself, and Boromir making a final stand that lasted 6 turns. Surprisingly enough, the rules were actually pretty balanced.

As for what inspired me to make all the books I have; a rather large lack of quality material for these factions really. There have been some fan-made army lists for most of the books I've made, but the majority was either outdated, very unbalanced, or completely off in terms of cultural background. So I figured I could probably (or at least hopefully) do better. Though I initially only intended to make an army book for Araby (the first version of which wasn't all that great either) for personal use, I eventually moved on to Kislev since I wanted a smaller force updated to 7th ed. I got generally great positive response to these lists, and since I had a lot of fun making them, I decided to keep on doing it.

After Cathay, which I really only considered collecting, I pretty much started making these books so that other people would have more choice of armies to choose from, along with reading the background for them. Being both a huge fan of the Warhammer World and military history in general, making army books just became a really fun hobby, since it both involved tracking down all the lost sources of official material and some of the better fan-made material, as well learning a lot of history I was unfamiliar with. As an added bonus, I have also become rather proficient with using Word, Photoshop and graphic design in general. I didn't really know any of that very well before starting out, but eventually learned how by trial and error, as well as a reading a lot of guides online.

Sigmar: Do you have a favourite book, expansion or supplement or one you're most proud of, if so then why ?

- That would probably be Araby, since it was the first book I made which I have definitely spent the most time on. It was a great opportunity to mix Warmaster, Age of Empires II, Medieval II and the Crusades period into one army, with a ton of different units and tactics to use. Araby in particular have many specialised units that offer a lot of variety, so playing them is really fun.

The Dogs of War list also lies closely to my heart, since that was first "serious" army development project I worked on, though I was only one of several developers at the time. But with time, most of the crew left off to pursue other things, meaning I pretty much "rose through the ranks" and got more creative control myself, including making the layout and graphics. That said, every rule in the Dogs of War book is a collaborative effort that everyone involved have been in agreement with in the end. Thanks to that and some rigorous playtesting and feedback, the book is probably a lot more balanced than if I would have been if I had done the whole thing myself.

Sigmar: Which was the most challenging book to write and why ?

- Cathay comes to mind, mainly because of the lack of official sources and differing views on what Cathay should look like. I based the book on what little mentions it had gotten in GW's writing, and then Chinese history to fill out the rest. The problem with most of the fan-made Cathay lists are, in my opinion, that so few seem to either realize or care about the difference between Chinese and Japanese culture, and thus most Cathayan lists are a mish-mash of Chinese mythology and Japanese Samurai, or have too much focus on spiritual mysticism compared to the rest of the Warhammer World. As such, I had to do quite a bit of rewriting and editing in the background department as well as writing from scratch in order to get a Cathay that felt predominantly Chinese, and still part of the Warhammer World. I'm still far from satisfied with it, and the upcoming update for Cathay should hopefully be a big improvement in this regard.

Sigmar: What difficulties do you have incorporating the fluff into the official Warhammer world ?

- Again, Cathay has to be mentioned. One of the most fun parts if actually to build upon the foundation laid by GW and make something complete out of it. With Cathay, there are very few sources to go on, and quite a few of them seem to contradict each other. The tricky part here is to keep most, if not all of them, and still get a coherent background and timeline that fits with the rest of the Warhammer World. This is one of the main things I am working on with many of my books at the moment.

Sigmar: How do you source the artwork, do you ever get any complaints ?!

- Most of the artwork is made by various artists from DeviantArt, though some are from various RPG books and some I have even gotten custom made. There have only been 1-2 complaints (none from GW) regarding some copy righted work which I have then removed. Most people are more than happy to have their art published as long as they are credited, which is something I have always tried to ensure. There have been cases where I have not known the artists name (thus being unable to credit them) and they have later approached me about it, in which case I have added them to the credits and everyone have been satisfied with the result.

The same goes for parts of the text. There have been some complaints regarding the originality of some of the text, where I have mostly made it clear on my blog regarding my sources, but could have made it clearer in the books themselves as to what I have and haven't written myself. That's not saying I didn't credit the people involved where possible, but rather that I should have done a better job at it, and not exclusively used the term "written by" (like the GW books) where I might have mostly been doing compiling and editing in the background department rather than writing completely new material. This is something I have tried to improve upon (along with always asking for permission first), so as to avoid having anyone getting upset in the future.

Sigmar: Name some of the your army specific rules you're most fond of and why you like them ?

- I quite like the Norse counter-charge combined with Berserkergang which makes for a really great combat combo, though the Fimir mist rule is also pretty cool. In general, the more intricate the rule is, the more I like it, since it tends to stand out from the crowd in this case. I have tried to keep most of the army-wide special rules relatively simple so they are easier to remember and won't slow down the game too much. So while writing really advanced rules can be a lot of fun, it's usually not as entertaining when you want to play and have to spend half the time looking through the rule book.

Sigmar: Have you ever played any of your armies or do you collect and paint any ?

- Several in fact! I have about 8000 pts of Dogs of War and 3000 pts of Araby, with another 1000 of Kislev and some Cathayan models. Dogs of War and Araby are probably the most fun to play among the seven armies I own.

Sigmar: What kind of feedback do you get on your blog and in the Battle Reporter forum ?

- Mostly positive stuff, either about how much people enjoy the books already, or ideas on how to improve them further. Feedback in general is always great as long as it's constructive. Unfortunately not all is, and comments like "this book is broken" or "I don't like this" without saying what is broken or what you don't like isn't really helpful at all. I don't have a problem with people disliking the rules, but I would at least like to know why that is, in case I can/want to improve it in the future. Fortunately, this is a minority, and most people give very useful feedback which I most thankful for.

Sigmar: What are the weaknesses of the official army books, are there any glaring issues in your opinion ?

- Well, I'm pretty sure anyone who has played the game for a decent amount of time can say that the official books are not all as great as they can be. Not saying I don't make mistakes myself (because I do), but one would think a company with 30 years in the business would be able to play test their rules better before shipping them out. I am of course mainly talking about the insane Daemons of 7th ed, Dark Elf Hydra and Skaven Abominations in this regard, though there are many more examples as well. Fortunately, 8th ed has been a lot better in terms of balance, though now it almost seems more customary to price certain units so highly that they are no longer worth taking (Marauders, Flagellants). Still, compared to 7th ed, they are definitely moving in the right direction.

Sigmar: If GW ever apporached you to have a crack at updating an army which army would you choose and what kind of changes would you make ?

- That one is pretty easy, since I've already updated the entire Bretonnia book to 8th ed. Bretonnia (along with the Wood Elves) is the currently most outdated of the official army books, and struggle with all the Steadfast units in 8th ed. The biggest change would be to give Knights in Lance formation Devastating Charge (as well as a slight points increase); this would give them the extra fighting power to trim down the enemy's numbers to a point where they won't always be Steadfast due to their numbers. Apart from that, I would also give them a lot more units options, including foot knights, scouts, a large altar, fey spirits, and more.

Sigmar: What would you change in the core rules if you were asked to help develop a 9th edition rulebook ?

- While I do like several of the changes in 8th ed, I actually preferred the 7th ed core rules more. The biggest issue to me is Steadfast and magic. In the case of Steadfast, I would definitely change it so that Disruption cancels it out, thus making flanking a lot more important and useful like it was in 7th ed. Charging would have more of a benefit that just +1 CR, and I would probably change the way supporting attacks works as well to avoid having great weapons everywhere, and finally make spears worth taking. [Sigmar: Are you reading GW ?] With magic, toning down the über spells would be a priority. While a certain level of randomness is fun, potentially losing a large chunk of your army to one lucky spell is not.

Sigmar: Do you ever get nervous that the GW lawyers will descend on you ?!

- I have actually wondered why that hasn't happened already, considering how far they have proven themselves to go to "protect their IP" as they call it. I'm guessing it probably has to do with the fact that I am releasing everything for free and not making any money whatsoever off it, and its practically free advertising for them. I have gotten emails from several people who would never have gotten involved in the hobby otherwise that now are paying customers.

If GW would send me a cease and desist I suppose I would have to oblige by that and remove whatever they might find in breach of copyright. Fortunately most of the books contain very little or none of GW's official material, and thus they cannot force to see them removed as long as I change the logo. Hopefully it won't come to that and they will leave both mine and other peoples' fan-made books alone and allow gamers to keep using them.

Sigmar: What plans do you have for future army books, expansions and supplements ?

- I'm currently working on updating all books to a real 8th ed format with full colour pages and artwork, as well as doing the necessary layout changes. Apart from that, I have a Pirates of Sartosa book in progress which I'm working on with a friend, plans for a book on the Cult of Slaanesh, an expansion for the Dogs of War and then possibly a smaller Allied Contingents book which would contain army lists for Gnoblars and the like.

Sigmar: Is there anybody in particular you'd like to take this opportunity to thank for helping with your projects ?

- Tons of people! It would have been utterly impossible to do everything myself in this short a time span, and it wouldn't have been this good either. Even though I mostly work on the books by myself in making the rules, the graphics, the layout and the editing, I write far from all the background text myself. As such, I would like to thank all the authors whose work have helped me put everything together and inspire me, all the artists whose beautiful art adore the book pages, and all the players who have provided me with playtest feedback, ideas, material and motivation to keep working on the books. Special mention has to go to Stefan Wolf (Tamrir on the forum) who has helped me with both rules, units, and background. Thanks a lot guys!

Sigmar: Now you have developed so many army books What on earth will you do if GW bring out a 9th edition rulebook ?!!!

- Keep on updating them of course! I intend to keep working on them for as long as I have the time to do so, and when I don't, I hope someone else will take up where I leave off and use these books as a basis for their own Araby/Cathay/Nippon army book. Always keep the spirit of the hobby alive!

Sigmar: On behalf of this blog's readers, thanks to Mathias for sharing his thoughts and insights with us.

Mathias can be contacted through his blog (see top of article) or via message in the  Battle Reporter forum (user name M4cR1II3n)

On a personal note, I'd like to say thanks to Mathias for his courtesy, patience and integrity and for moderating the Battle Reporter forum discussion threads for his armies.

Gratitude, Sigmar.

Cathay Army book comments and discussion thread

This army is completely unofficial and is not endorsed by Games Workshop!

The original Cathay book was first released in spring 2010 and took our forum and the Warhammer community by storm. Mathias has revisited his excellent work and greatly improved upon it! It's been given a complete overhaul and is now a more balanced, 8th edition  army and it looks truly stunning - and I'm not exaggerating.

Not only that but Mathias has also taken the opportunity to add a few very interesting new units, characters, magic lore and items.

Here's what Mathias has to say on his Warhammer Armies project blog
"And not even halfway through April yet! I expected to be hunched over the background section for weeks, but fortunately, it worked out rather well a lot faster than that. This new and much improved version of Cathay includes the following: Additional background for Cathay's history. Every single official mention of Cathay is in there (as far as I know), and all dates are concurrent with the rest of the Warhammer World.
    • New units: Field Engineers, Wu Xia and Brass Titans.
    • New Special Characters: Tian Shi, Huan Bei, Chu-Ye Xian, Cheng Long and Dalan-Tai.
    • New magic items.
    • Completely revised Ying and Yan lore.
    • Lots of balance changes to bring the army better into 8th ed.
    • New full colour layout, filled with tons of new art.
    • Bugs fixes, as usual.
Again, great thanks to Stefan Wolf who helped me with parts of the fluff, especially that of the special characters! And as usual, let me know of any bugs or other oddities. I shall now feast on toast to celebrate this joyous moment before passing out. Cheerio!"

Sigmar's Cathay Army Book Review

The book is 98 pages long (about 32meg).

The first thing which strikes you about this book is the superb cover which speaks "collect this army". Then when you flick through the pages you notice the highly themed pages with the brilliant headers, footers, choice of font and really, really superb artwork. It's got a very professional feel to it throughout, check this page out to see what I mean (click to open in a new window)

Warhammer Fantasy Cathay Army Book contents

There is an absolute treasure chest of fluff covering all aspects of the Empire of the Celestial Dragon and (I'll say it again) the art is truly wonderful and the best found in any of Mathias's army books. I'll leave you folks to enjoy reading all the background and to soak up history and culture while I move on to the army list itself and focus on some of my favourite units and rules.

Cathay Fantasy Army Special RulesCathay Army Special Rules

The "Glory for the Dragon Emperor" rule enables those units bearing the ability to fight using supporting attacks in three ranks, not just two (even when they charge). Significantly, the core Imperial Infantry have this ability and, while their leadership of 6 is rather weak, I foresee a lot of steadfast horde size unit blocks being used to keep the enemy in place while Dragon Lancers (a reasonably cheap [16pts] core cavalry unit) positions for flank charges.

The "Auxiliaries" rule will help to calm the forces of Cathay and prevent widespread panic from spreading if used wisely. Units with this ability (for example, the Frenzy prone Hill Tribesmen or the blowpipe carrying Monkey Warriors - yes they really are  monkeys) do not cause panic to other friendly units without it.

The Art of War

Mathias has implemented an imaginative and quite ingenious concept into the Cathayan army. It's the use of on-field strategists (a cheap hero level character) who can instruct nearby units throughout the course of a battle. They shout the orders and providing the unit hears them they will benefit from the stratagem that the strategist has employed. There are 11 stratagems, each of which has a different effect and points cost. The strategist is limited to 75pts worth of stratagems and they can only be used to help the more disciplined units with the Glory for the Dragon Emperor rule. All that said, the stratagems still have the potential to come in very useful and could get you out of a hole that would, with any other army, be unavoidable (being charged in the flank for instance).

Amazing Cathay Artwork

The stratagems are really well thought out and it's a great example of what can be achieved by some creative thinking in keeping with the army's theme.

Here are a few examples; The Sleeping Crocodile (25pts) - the unit can reform if charged in the flank so that they meet the charge forward facing;  The Rain of Death (20pts) - the unit can fire even if they have marched that turn; The Running Rabbit (20pts) - until the start of the next turn the unit ignores panic from nearby breaking units or units fleeing through them; The Blinding Light (15pts) - [Imperial Infantry with shields only] enemies charging the unit are blinded by the shields and lose all charging bonuses.

The real drawback of stratagems is that you use up a hero slot for a character that has no martial prowess and no armour and will be a real target for enemy assassins and marksmen. Also, with some stratagems you could go through a whole battle without ever needing to deploy the strategy because there is no need or the opportunity does not present itself.

I really like the concept though and anything that upsets the enemy's plans, when they think they've got you in a corner you cannot get out of, is a good use of points allowance as far as I'm concerned.

Lore of Ying and Yang Cathay Magic Art
Lore of Ying and Yan

The implementation of the Magic Lore system is tidily in keeping with the Cathay philosophy. It works on the basis of balance, in that when you cast a Ying spell it must be followed the next time you cast by a Yang spell and vice versa. To facilitate this when you roll on the Magic Lore for spells you get both the Ying and Yan version of each spell. Ying spells are typically hex and direct damage while Yan spells are more often augment spells.

It's a clever system and while it might seem like you're getting a lot more spells for your buck, you are being limited to some extent which could provide a few conundrums and tricky decision making when it comes to timing your magical attacks and defence.

Well done Mathias.

Treasures of the Seven Heavens

Cathay has a somewhat limited array of magical items, there are but 10 of them (plus of course those from the core rule book). I don't see this as a particular disadvantage though because the magical items available for selection are generally of the more powerful (and expensive) variety. There's enough there to buff up your custom character, wizard or a BSB. I'll leave you to check them out in your own time.

Lords, Heroes and Special Characters

There are 8 Lord and Hero special characters, plus the usual standard Lords and Heroes and they vary greatly so there should be a few characters to fit all tastes. My personal favourites thus far have to be Cheng Long (think of a cross between Mike Tyson and Bruce Lee but harder)  and The Great Trickster himself, the Monkey King (like the title character from the late 1970's TV series named "Monkey").

Both characters are oozing with potential for fun Warhammer shenanigans if, like me, you enjoy play acting, impersonating your characters and generally making a fool of yourself during your battles.

Cheng Long (Hero)

Warhammer Cathay Grand Master Warrior Monk
The one hundred year old Grand Master martial artist who has attained such a deep understanding of close combat that it has become an instinct (he even bested one of his former disciples while sleeping !) and single handedly defended a town gate against a horde of beatmen - for several days ! That's what I mean about being hard.

Cheng Long's profile stats look pretty good but when you factor in his unique version of the Martial Arts Fighting Styles special rules (a bit like the Wood Elf Wardancers variant) they look great.

Cheng has a solid 4, str4 attacks with a weapon skill of 7 and can alternate each turn between adding D3 attacks, +2 to his strength, Always Strikes First and +1 to hit, Heroic Killing Blow or a 4+ ward save (by using the Praying Mantis style). What a cool character.

The Monkey King (Hero)

Cathay Monkey King ArtThis fellow is a completely different kettle of fish to Cheng, first of all he has the ability to fly, he can also taunt the enemy resulting in them losing control and charging him (unless they are Immune to Psychology). He has 3, Ws5, str4 (+2 str thanks to his magical telescopic rod) attacks and as a one off, can use a magically enchanted item to get his out of a sticky situation.

The enchanted item is his hair :-)  he simply pulls a hair from his head to create a doppelganger of himself which doubles his number of attacks and grants a very handy 4+ ward save until the beginning of his next turn.

He certainly embodies the spirit of Monkey from the TV series, a well thought out and inspiring character.

Another character I really like is Dalan-Tai (Hero) who is a nod in the direction of the real world Mongols and their influence on Chinese (sorry Cathay) history.

He and any unit of Steppe Archers (Fast Cavalry) he leads benefit from his masterful husbandry and horseman-ship (they can re-roll failed dangerous terrain tests). This should allow said unit to more confidently charge through woods and the like in the knowledge that they stand a decent chance of getting to the enemy before the woods get to them!

Dalan-Tai and his unit also have the ability to make a Stand and Shoot reaction before fleeing from a charge, an attribute that I suspect could become very annoying for the enemy :-) Oh, and before you think this isn't much of a bonus, he has a Bs of 6, his shots hit with a Str of 5 and they ignore armour saves. In my opinion, he's worth taking into battle with a small unit of Steppe Archers just to get your enemy's back up ;-)

Cathay Fantasy Battle Artwork

The Emperor's Army

You will find a wide variety of different units to choose from which should provide for an array of different battlefield tactics. There are 6 different core units, 10 special units and 5 rare units. The prevalence of specialized gun powder weapons (such as rockets, cannons and hand mortars) and existence of battlefield support engineers lends the Cathay army an Empire feel. Indeed the unbreakable Terracotta Warriors could be likened with Flagellants although they are harder hitters and more resilient (Str4, T4) but unstable so when they start to lose they will quickly crumble.

Core Units

Cathay Imperial Infantry
I think the core of the Cathay army are more important than some other Warhammer armies. For instance, when I play High Elves I generally like to allocate as many points as possible to the special units such as Sword Masters, Phoenix Guard and White Lions. I don't think this will be the case when selecting a Cathay Army, the core infantry are nice and cheap and will allow you to field horde units and thus benefit from the steadfast rule without really eating into your points allowance.

The basic profile of the Imperial Infantry with their relative low leadership and weapon skill is not as good as that of most other human units such as Empire Halberdiers or Spearmen. However, when you include the benefit of fighting in 3 ranks and the potential benefits of a nearby strategist the unit as a whole becomes better (potentially !)

Cathay Repeater Crossbows
The Chu Ko Nu are also a must have core unit in my opinion if used with great care (and a bit of luck). They are archers with a Bs of 3 that carry Repeater Cathayan Crossbows (3 shots, 16", Str3) and they cost 5pts. The unit cannot put up a fight against anything but the weakest opposition so you'd better try to keep them out of combat and definitely away from any large units that they won't be able to kill outright. They are ideal against small unarmoured vanguard units and the likes of war dogs, dire wolves and flyers trying to get to your war machines.

The remaining core units; Dragon Lances (with a small charge bonus), Steppe Archers (especially when combined with Dalan-Tai - as mentioned above); the frenzied Hill Tribesmen ambushers and Monkey Warriors (poisoned blow darts) all have their uses for support attacks, flanking, war machine hunters and monster killers and they make for a nicely balanced army core.

Special Units

Cathay - Celestial Dragon Monks
There are lots of exciting options to choose from when it comes to special units. You can opt to go in hard with some fast and furious attackers or take a somewhat subtler approach with Hero buffed units of stubborn Emperor's Guard and unbreakable Terracotta Warriors to hold the line while your ranged artillery and wizards get to work and your poison users (such as Monkey Warriors and  Nightblades) take on enemy monsters.

Of course you'll need to consider your flanks whether you attack or defend but then you do have relatively cheap Dragon Lancers (Core) and a Dragon! (Rare)
Emperor's Guard Artwork
The special units all offer something very different to your army in terms of both looks and tactical application. From the very skilled but totally unarmoured, skirmishing Celestial Dragon Monks to the Wu Xia (Monstrous Cavalry - resembling Giant Toads) that can literally jump over intervening units to get to their target. There are rock hard Foo Statues (think Troll but immune to psychology), unbreakable but unstable Terracotta Warriors, a chariot, a ballista and for those preferring sharp steel and the gleam of fine armour there are the Emperor's Guard and Swordsaints (similar to Swordmasters). Nightblades provide the scouting option and Field Engineers the specialist infantry support with a variety of highly mobile war machine-like options.

Warhammer Fantasy Cathay Ballista

Rare Units

Your selection of Rare Units really depends on whether you want to sit back and take a defensive posture or  you're more inclined to take the fight to the enemy. The two more defensively aligned units are the Fire Arrow and Dragon Cannon.

The Fire Arrow is really a rocket launcher which fires multiple armour piercing projectiles but suffers from the Slow to Fire rule so cannot be used for a stand and shoot reaction. The Fire Arrow is also subject to the Black Powder War Machine Misfire chart which, for me, makes it a risky choice. I generally prefer more reliable troops on the ground than risk/reward units, having said that at 110 pts with the possibility of firing 30 rockets (3 x artillery dice) I can see it being a popular choice.

Cathay Dragon Cannon
The Dragon Cannon is a standard cannon with an additional explosive effect (d6 str3 hits) on impact, before bounce. Accordingly, it's a quite bit more expensive than your average cannon but I guess it really depends on which enemy you expect to be facing as to whether you take it into battle with you. An average of 3.5 str3 hits isn't going to help much against Giants and the like but it could help whittle down the lesser minions.

The three remaining units are all combat oriented and more to my liking, they all cause terror, pack a punch and the Phoenix and of course the Dragon can both fly.

Cathay Phoenix Rare Unit
The Phoenix is an interesting unit; it has a devastating move attack which allows the Phoenix to fly 18" and inflict a strength 5 flaming hit against all models it flies over (determined like bouncing cannon ball hits). Not only that but it's hard to kill T5, W5 and with -1 to wound for non-magical attacks against it. Last but not least, it can explode into a ball of flames rather than dying just when you thought you had delivered it's coup de grace. It's an especially nasty piece of work against a Wood Elf army with all that dry bark waiting to be ignited :-)

The Phoenix isn't a single-handed battle winner though, it will need support and shouldn't be used in isolation against any large unit with two handed or magical weapons / attacks.

The Dragon is pretty much a regular Dragon, ie. no fun to fight against! (Ws6, S6, T6, W5, I3, A5, Ld9)

Fantasy Battle Cathay - Brass Titan Rare Unit
The Brass Titan is a battle winner if you can position it to face off against the right opponents. It will attract the attention of every single enemy war machine and ranged attack on the battlefield and all monster assassins so it could be tricky getting the desired outcome. It's big problem is instability, it will therefore lose an extra wound if it loses a combat so do not face off against large ranked up units or a monster killer with multiple high strength attacks. I reckon it's best used against "intermediate" units, it should perform well  against units with few ranks and low strength attacks small units of cavalry (if it can avoid being charged). Keep it close to a couple of support units that can deny the enemy their rank bonus and the Titan should come up trumps. The Titan is unbreakable, has a 3+ armour save, Magic Resistance (2), St6, T6, A5 and a combat winning attack if it gets surrounded named the "Clean Sweep" (str6 hit on all enemies in contact) - ouch !

Summary (army strengths and weaknesses)

I haven't played any battles with this army nor have I spent hours delving into the army list and selecting a competitive force so you'll need to take my initial impressions of the army strengths and weaknesses as just that. First thing that you should note is that being a human based army it's inherent weakness will be toughness, as is the case with most but the heavily armoured. There are however, plenty of cheap core troops to choose from and if used in large units it shouldn't be too much of a concern.

Best Fantasy Battle Artwork - Cathay

The army has enough in the way of specialized units to counter any enemy strategy. It could be a tricky job selecting a balanced army if you're not sure who you're facing in battle but then that's the case for several other armies in the Warhammer World (and part of the fun). The special rules, points values and unit choices in each category all seem reasonable and there really is a wonderful selection to choose from. I think the army's greatest strength is it's flexibility to meet any situation (given the right army selection choices). It's a little short of flyers but then you do have access to an ambush unit to help tackle those pesky rear echelon types and you could always take the Phoenix or Dragon.

I'd really like to take this army into battle, I think it holds a lots of surprises in store for the Cathay-uneducated. Also, I think you'll find that small army tweaks (use of stategists and Yong Yan magic for instance) could lead to very different battles even against the same opposition, something which you don't always get with some Warhammer armies in my experience (I'm thinking Vampires, Warriors of Chaos and Dwarfs).

The Miniatures

Ok, this is the tough bit. It's not going to be easy finding Chinese (sorry I mean Cathay) minis but if you're determined and prepared to compromise and improvise it can be done. I managed to build up a whole "Fishmen Army" (which I prefer to call The Nauticans) but it did take a lot of internet trawling to get there.

Your best starting point to discover the company names who produce such miniatures on eBay. I tried the following search which came up with some Chinese "Ancients" Cavalry, Spearmen and Warriors so minis of the correct scale do exist (you might also be able to supplement the force with Japanese equivalents). The War Machines and Monsters should prove easier to find alternatives for.

Mathias has done an incredible job on this book and it's his finest work to date in my opinion.

New High Elf Miniatures

The new High Elves army book and presumably some (although probably not all) of the new miniatures are released at the end of April (27-04-2013) beginning of May, here's a sneak peek of some of the new models.

I reckon these minis will receive a mixed reaction (personally, I love the characters and am quite impressed by the "Sky Chariot" and Phoenix). They are another bold attempt by Games Workshop to breathe some freshness into the army (which I think was last updated in Winter 2007). The Sky Chariot and Flamespyre Phoenix certainly look very original and are another example of GW creating larger center piece battle ground models on a much bigger scale than we used to see a few years back.

Anyway, here are the pics, courtesy of Rob H on our Warhammer Battle Reporter Facebook group (he found them on http://grimdark.org/) Many thanks for sharing Rob and to the grimdark folks.

Sigmar's Battle Recorder website - Armies Vs page

On a personal note

I created the site to try to develop my website programming skills and to encourage some more people to join the Battle Reporter forum (hopefully). The site is free to use, there are no catches (or spam - you can "opt in" to receiving email updates if you like).

I used ASP.NET, SQL Server, C# and AJAX to develop the site and it's hosted by SmarterASP.NET (a low cost and efficient web host that I can recommend).

The development was fun, frustrating and rewarding in equal measure. My next project is a miniature upload website to allow users to rate and comment on painters, miniatures and conversions (a bit like Coolminiornot but with more rating options, categories, search options, links to great miniature painters and customize-able slideshows). I'm going to attempt to do it in MVC and JQuery, preferred technologies in my line of work.

The new Campaign feature allows the user to choose between 5 different alliances:-
  • the Order of Law

  • the Rebel Realms and
  • the Mercenaries for Hire
Each Alliance consists of 5 Warhammer armies, any battles you play with those armies contributes to the success of the alliance in the campaign which is shown in the Campaign page (to be added soon).

You are awarded campaign points according to your success on the battlefield, "war spoils" for your contribution to your alliance's overall number of battles, "victory points" for your alliance's final standing and  "honour points" (there is more honour for fighting for alliances with fewer members). Your historic campaign points are recorded in a Campaign Heroes table for everybody to see.

The first campaign will be named "A Time of Foreboding" - a new incursion of chaos threatens the world!

Albion, Amazons, Araby, Estalia and Norse updated to 8th Edition Warhammer army book pdfs + 24 other superb unofficial Fantasy Battle armies.

Warhammer Fantasy Book pdfs - Unofficial: Albion, Amazons, Araby, Estalia and Norse
Excellent news for collectors of unofficial, fan-made Fantasy Battle armies; Mathias has recently revised and finely tweaked 5 armies to bring them into the Warhammer 8th edition rule book world. The book revisions have also benefited from beautiful, harmonised, all colour transformations - they truly are works of art in all respects.

Below you will find:-
  • a brief overview of each army
  • a slideshow of some pics to give you a taster
  • links to the armies themselves (click the army book covers)
  • the army discussion threads in the Battle Reporter forum
  • notable changes to the 8th edition book and
  • a link to my previous 7th edition army book reviews*.

  • * note that there have been extensive revisions since my previous book reviews but they should still serve to give a faithful impression of the armies.

I will be returning to these armies for more thorough reviews once I have completed my Warhammer Fantasy Battle Leagues project (www.wfbattles.com) which will to go live sometime in August 2013.

To follow Mathias's development plans check out his Warhammer Armies Project blog.

All armies featured below are unofficial and are NOT endorsed by Games Workshop.

Warhammer Fantasy Albion pdf download
Overview

Barbarian warriors, tribal chieftains, mysterious druids and strange occult-like rituals to the Mother Goddess symoblise the Misty Isle and it's peoples (think ancient Britons). Previous Albion Army Book (brief review)

Noted Changes

- Extended history for Albion, including Dark Shadows and the history of the Gaels - A timeline of Albion - Completely revised geography section - New units: Hunters and Centaurs - New Special Characters: Dural Durak, Morrigan and Connor McFeud - Completely revised Magic Item section.

Albion Army Discussion thread

Why you should collect an Albion Army

Gaelic Fury (Swiftstride and Hatred to run down your foe), Woad Paint (6+ ward save), lots of fast, cheap skirmisher-like units, Fenbeasts! (fearsome, unbreakable, regenerating troll-like creatures), high toughness centaurs, chariots, Morrigan - an ethereal sorceress and, more generally, the earthy feel and wonderful moody green look to the book - embrace your Celtic soul! Also, you should have no difficulty tracking down the 28mm miniatures you need (Ancient Britons, Celts, Norse, Germanic Tribes etc on eBay).

Warhammer Fantasy Amazons pdf download
Overview

The mythical legend of warrior women living deep within the jungles of Lustria may not be a myth at all. The military sisterhood army book is wonderfully presented with a plethora of awesome artwork. They share some traits with the Lizardmen army, employing some similar beats such as Terradons and Cold Ones.

A challenging army to use in battle due to their relative low strength weaponry. Previous Amazons Army Book (detailed review)

Noted Changes

- 4 new units: Jaguar Hunting Packs, Terradon Riders, Medusas and an Avatar of Rigg - 2 new special characters: Lwaxana and Lysippe - New/updated Magic Items - Timeline for the Amazons - Much edited background section - Units now have access to a multitude of High Age Artefacts.

Amazons Army Discussion thread

Why you should collect an Amazons Army

First and foremost, an all female army is absolutely unique in the Warhammer world and the book is so superbly presented it's difficult not to fall in love with the concept of making male slaves of your enemies. The Amazon miniatures should also be reasonably easy to come by (28mm Amazons on eBay), even the gorillas! Finally, it's a good excuse to play lots of battles against the new Lizardmen and, in my opinion, it's one of the more challenging armies to field in battle which makes vanquishing those pesky amphibians and reptilians even more satisfying :-)

Warhammer Fantasy Araby pdf download
Overview

The Araby army (along with Nippon and Cathay - extensive review) is probably one of the most strongly themed human-based armies in the whole collection of unofficial army books.

There is a wealth of Arabic and Middle Eastern background to draw upon; flying carpets (cool!), war elephants (2d6 impact hits), four types of genies, naffatun (skirmishing, napalm grenadiers), janissaries (disciplined, all rounder elites incl. Bs4), assassins and thieves, camel riders, dervishers (a bit like goblin fanatics) and the Sandglass of Time (a hard-to-kill shrine-like war machine that can negate enemy magic and has it's own spell pool).

Previous Araby Army Book review (detailed)

Noted Changes - "...change in their army-wide special rule, which is completely new. Rather than just have a one-turn bonus to the army, I wanted to give them something that would reflect upon the real Saracens' religious focus and fearlessness in battle as well as their speed. As such, all models with Zealotry roll 3D6 for Psychology tests and Break tests (still not as good as Cold-Blooded!), and also re-roll 1's when charging. Of course, this means that there have been points increases almost across the board." - Mathias

Araby Army Discussion thread

Why you should collect an Araby Army

It's a fast moving, daring, desert army with heaps of character and great if you enjoy playing against Tomb Kings because it really fits in with the fluff and geography - unlike many other "vs Tomb Kings" games. Magic carpet riders, Dervisher "fanatics" and Genies - oh yes! What's not to like ?

The army really appeals to me, it's nicely balanced, reliable, with lots of selection options, has interesting units and tactically it has excellent flanking potential. Like all human armies, it's biggest challenge is protecting that oh-so-tender human form (ie. toughness 3).

There are stacks of 28mm Arabic miniatures on eBay that fit the bill.

Warhammer Fantasy Estalia pdf download
Overview (incl army book review)

Similar in many respects to The Empire army, the Estalians deploy well drilled, armed and armoured rank and file and plenty of gun powder weapons. They have a solid selection of ranged and close combat core units; useful  cavalry - lancers, cheap fast cavalry (core) and pistoliers; special and rare cannons and are themed by the likes of conquistadors, caballeros, inquisitors and, wait for it... my favourite... the extremely unfortunate Fire Bulls with their Bull Run special rule - how do you like your steak ?

Previous Estalia Army Book Review (detailed)

Noted Changes

Almost completely revised history section, including the timeline - New army-wide special rules: Tercio Formation, Estalian Steel, and revised Tactical Supremacy - New units: Almogavars, War Dogs, Mountain Guns. Missionaries, Serfs, Inquisitorial Henchmen are no more - Revised units: Diestro are now characters, Handgunners are a core choice, and Royal Guard replaces Arqubusiers - New Special Characters: Isabella Giovanna Luccelli, Grand Inquistor de Hojeda and Maria de Salvo. King Miraz is no more - 9 new magic items replacing the old ones.

Estalia Army Discussion Thread

Why you should collect an Estalia Army

Estalia is for the Empire rank and file enthusiast looking for something new or for generals who don't care for the Empire fluff but like the kind of tactical options such an army offers.

An Estalian army is even better drilled than an Empire army demonstrated by it's "Tactical Supremacy" army wide rule. This rule allows the army to move more freely using 3D6 (and discarding the highest dice) when testing for marching, reforming, redirecting charges and possibly most importantly when rallying.  The Estalians also employ an interesting and quite powerful tactical formation named the Tercio allowing pikemen and infantry men to support one another as a single unit and nearby crossbows/handgunners to lend supporting fire. Both of these unique rules offer something just different enough to tempt a potential Empire player to try their hand at Estalia instead (or aswell as).

Warhammer Fantasy Norse pdf download
Overview

The Norse are a warrior based society, steeped in mythology, of extremely hardy, war-like humans and lets face it, you'd have to be living so close to the source of the Chaos Incursions !

With many frenzied, unbreakable and immune to psychology troops the army book really conjures up the impression of desperate men doing whatever is necessary to fend off the marauding Chaos hordes.

The Norse is one of the most popular books among aficionados of unofficial Warhammer armies.  In fact, Norse is currently 3rd place in Mathias's Favourtie Unofficial Army Poll just behind the awesome Bretonnia (unofficial) and Nippon books.

Previous Norse Army Book Review

Noted Changes

Extended background for the Norse, especially in their history and geography department - New units: Sons of Thor, Thralls, Ulfjarls, Half Giants, Norse Horsemen - 2 new special characters - written by Stefan Wolf, who is starting to become a bit of a regular in helping out with writing supporting background for the units! - New Lore of the Seidr - spells based on the Aenir (Norse gods) - Revised Magic Items - Lots of balance changes - infantry is generally more expensive, but the Norse list have plenty more variation now - Full colour artwork and graphic layout, with lots of great new illustrations to peruse - Counter-Charge now only applies to units with a King or Jarl in them, streamlined function to avoid confusion with multiple chargers - Most Infantry 1 pt cheaper - Fearless rule for Reaver removed - Marauders and Half Giants only have hand weapons as basic, have to purchase other weapons.

Norse Army Discussion Thread

Why you should collect a Norse Army

The Norse are the equivalent in spirit (if not martial prowess) to an untainted Warriors of Chaos army. They live to fight... and win - it's the only choice they have. How can you not like a beleaguered army fighting on all fronts, the first in line to stem the tide of Chaos, true heroes protecting the northern frontier of the Old Worlde ?

Feature Summary

You can read all about it on the home page so I'll just highlight provide a round up...
The site enables users to record their battles, notes and report links online, view their battle history (and download it), create their own leagues for friends and clubs, participate in the current campaign by choosing an alliance and fighting for war spoils and honour and check out all the key battle stats to help hone your army selection strategy.
There are also various polls to test the community's opinion on all the armies and miniatures, which armies are loved, loathed and feared and to see who collects what and how much of it is painted!

I'm really hoping that this will help people get more from our awesome hobby and we can build a bit of a community up around it, stomping stunties should be enjoyed with friends :-)

Please help me to spread the work on Facebook, Twitter, Forums and Google+

That's it folks, check out the images below which, hopefully, will speak for themselves.

WHFB Leagues, Best Armies & Players (online now!)

www.wfbattles.com is online (and FREE, forever* !) and inviting players to post their battles, get ranked, create leagues and join campaigns.

Warrior Priest of Sigmar
* if you're wondering how come it's free, where are the catches..? There are none, I created the site to learn about SQL server, ASP.NET and C#. It costs me £80 a year which I see as a small price to pay for some real users (ie. you :-)) to test my creations out on and, hopefully, greatly improve upon.

If you've visited before you'll hopefully know what it's all about if not...

You add your battle details (10 battles per month), get ranked vs other players, can create your own league for friends/clubs, join an alliance and fight in a campaign for points and accolades and get to see loads of stats (which hopefully will improve over time).

The stats will be further developed but at the moment they focus on:- which are the best armies, which armies perform best vs which enemies, the best unit types (eg. Core, Special) the best Troop Types (eg. Cavalry, Warmachines) and which game phases you should be concentrating on (eg. Combat or Magic)

If you're still none the wiser, then either visit and read the Home page or see...

That's it. Enjoy and get posting those battles.

Warhammer Fantasy Domination

Battlefields page added to the WFB Stats Reckoning section.

I've just added a new page which analyses member battles by Warhammer Faction, ie. Forces of Order, Forces of Destruction and non-aligned Armies.
WFB Stats - The Scales of the Eternal War
The Scales of War
You will find:-
  • a pie chart named "The Scales of War" which shows the dominance of the 3 factions in the Eternal War plus
  • a "Bitter Rivals" analysis showing which armies share the greatest rivalry on the field of battle.

A World Embattled - The Scales of War

  • This works by aggregating the member battles which involve armies from different "factions" (eg. Destruction vs Order vs Non-Aligned).
  • Internal strife between armies from the same faction are ignored.
  • Battles are weighted according to their points value size, so larger battles count more towards the faction's dominance than smaller ones.
  • Only member wins are included in the analysis, draws do not affect dominance and losses are ignored.

Bitter Warhammer Rivals

  • Shows those rival armies, from different factions that have spilled the most blood.
  • Rivalries are ordered by ferocity of fighting (number of member battles weighted by pts value).
  • Each member army is represented against their most bitter enemy.
  • All battles count irrespective of outcome (a draw doesn't mean that heads were not lopped off!)

Many thanks to all the awesome painters who have granted me permission to use their miniature images. Their contact details are on the Warhammer Fantasy Battle Links & Credits page.

Warhammer Fantasy Batrep Ratings - www.WFBattles.com (coming soon)

WFB Report ratings (on www.WFBattles.com) will soon include the option to rate battles and gain battle reporting reputation (I'm naming it Battle Scribe Rep).

I've been working on Star Ratings for Battle Report notes & related batrep links on other WFB forums. The update will be applied retrospectively so all battles can be rated (so don't let it stop you posting them now).

It will allow any member to rate a battle report, the rating will be aggregated to provide average ranks per WHFB report (and show the number of times it's been rated).

I'll be adding a new page for the best Fantasy Battle Scribes (ie. the people who write the best reports or make the best YouTube battle reports - ranked by Scribe Reputation).

The Battles Archive page will also be updated so you can filter/sort by battle report rating (1 to 10 stars) The pic shows what I have so far on my development server...

WFB Battle Statistics (from ArmiesVs and Reckoning Pages)

  • Dark Elves are the most successful army, followed by Warriors of Chaos
  • Orcs and Goblins and The Empire prop up the foot of the table
  • Core infantry units are the most influential on the battlefield, followed by cavalry and then monsters
  • Magic just trumps shooting as the most influential phase but neither are as important as combat
  • Vampire Counts players are the luckiest, Bretonnians have the most fun while Dwarfs roll the worst dice and Dark Elf players are the most gloomy
  • High Elves are the most common foe, they best Wood Elves and Bretonnia and are beaten most by Skaven and Warriors of Chaos
  • Forces of Destruction are winning the eternal war (if Forces of Order and Non-aligned armies joined  a coalition then the war would be hanging more in the balance).
  • The Empire and Daemons of Chaos are the most bitter rivals
  • Ogre Kingdoms are best in tournaments, Wood Elves are the worst
  • Order of Law is winning the current fantasy campaign, closely followed by The Rebel Realms

WHFB Best Armies

  • Daemons of Chaos is the least wanted army and Dwarfs is the most venerated army
  • Warriors of Chaos is by far the most feared army, while few fear Empire, Bretonnia or Gobbos
  • Vampire Counts is the best army book, Orcs and Goblins are the most collected

  • Trusted / Distrusted posters :-

  • Two new buttons are being added to the Members Roster page to enable any member to trust or distrust the battles that have been added by another member. Anyone who is distrusted enough will be removed by default from all the ranking (although they can be added back in by manually selecting the option to do so).
Note: Distrusted members may also be removed from forum member's "Legends" pages.

  • Most Valuable Members :-

Rank and Reward system added to Sigmar's Warhammer Fantasy Battles.

Warhammer Fantasy Awards
by LoserStudio.blogspot.com
I have added an awards and ranking system to WFBattles.com named:-

"Member's Prestige" (under the Members section).

In a nutshell it rewards members for their participation on the site.

The most important aspect of the ranking system is that it rewards most those who post the best battle notes and/or links to external batreps and YouTube videos.

You get rewarded not only for the detail of your notes and for adding links, you also receive points for every Star that another member rates your battle. To encourage members to rate other people's battles, I've increased the reward for each battle rated to 2pts (irrespective of stars awarded). Members can rate battles 1 to 10 stars by clicking the "+" in the notes "N" column on the battles page.

Members are also awarded more points for posting Losses and Draws - because it's a lot easier to share your glories than your defeats!

The prestige points are used to calculate your rank, there are 15 ranks in total from the lowly Citizen all the way up to "God" status - I doubt anybody will ever achieve such high acclaim but you never know :-)

Simply filling in your profile polls and joining a campaign alliance will move you from Citizen to Militia.

To see how all the points are allocated click the below image and open the "+ Prestige Pts key".

Feedback in the WFBR forum or the WFBattles Facebook page (PLEASE LIKE ME!). Thank you.
