Design a new Special Character for Warhammer Fantasy

$
0
0

If you think you can come up with a balanced, exciting new WFB Special Character then read on.

Number 16 of the Master Tactician competitions is all about constructing a completely new, original and exciting character for Fantasy Battle games.

The special character must be a balanced addition to an existing army and can include it's own special rules, magic items / spells (your own design or rulebook items), mounts and other equipment options.

The more background fluff and pics (eg. your own artwork or mini photos) the better.

The Battle Reporter forum members will vote for the winner.

The prize is just the respect of our humble Warhammer community :-) and some forum reputation. Please post your entries below:-

Terrain & Scenery Competition for Warhammer Fantasy Battle

$

0

We're looking for a few entrants into our forum's Terrain & scenery Competition. In particular Fantasy Battle scenery (think Skaven rat infested cesspits, Dwarven ale houses, Chaos sacrificial shrines, Beastmen execution stumps, Goblin magic mushroom fields, Bretonnian "Excalibur" Lakes, Dark Elf torture chambers, Lizardmen Slann-Mage throne rooms, Wood Elf forest camps, Empire Altdorf machine factories...

Ok, maybe I'm being a bit ambitious, a few hills, fences, rivers and the odd watchtower would be a good start.

Nothing too large or small will be rejected (from a simple hill, mud ditch, fence fortification to the ridiculously impressive High Elf Port below). The prize will be $1m - yeah right ! All we can promise you is the admiration of your fellow gamers and modelers.

Please note that we're not really looking for mine fields, razor wire, plasma bomb crater holes or piles of spent 40k artillery shells etc. but we'll take what comes if that's the only scenery entered !

Leave a message in the forum if you're interested in entering.

As an added incentive, the winners will make there way into the Hall of Fame in the below blog for expert mini painters and terrain makers (click the pic to go there).

Classic Regiments of Renown PDF Released

Classic Regiments of Renown PDF cover

The original Regiments of Renown rules have been updated for the Warhammer 8th Edition Fantasy Battle ruleset.

This expansion is completely unofficial and is not endorsed by Games Workshop!

If you recognize a lot of the listed unit names below and they bring back fond memories and a reminiscent tear to the eye then you're probably as old and grey as I am. Mathias has been hard at work again and has brought us a Warhamer Expansion updated for the 8th edition rulebook. Rules for most of the very original sets (from the 1980's !) are included plus some of the slightly newer units.

I still think these are some of the finest miniatures that Citadel / Games Workshop have produced (although that could be rose tinted specs at work !)  The Knight of Origo and Nick Lund's Eeza Ugezod's Mother Crushers are simply awesome (see the slideshow)

  • The Knights Of Origo
  • Harboth and The Black Mountain Boys
  • Mad Mullah Aklan'd's Death Commandos
  • The Bowmen Of Wood Elf Prince Oreon
  • Elwing's Elven Guard Cavalry
  • Karnac's Lizardmen Raiders
  • Flying Gargoyles Of Barda
  • Notlob's Orcish Bolt-Throwing Engines
  • The Mighty Throg And His Hobgoblin Despoilers Of The Dark Lands
  • The Disciples Of The Red Redemption
  • Avenging Knights Of The Cleansing Flame
  • Eeza Ugezod's Mother Crushers
  • The Nightmare Legion – Mordini's Doomed Legion
  • Skarloc's Wood Elf Archers
  • Prince Ulther’s Imperial Dwarfs – The Dragon Company
I still have some of these sets, if you don't want yours anymore try eBay because you can get a LOT of money for complete sets in good nick with the original boxes  - Regiments of Renown on eBay

Warhammer Expansion Summary

The Book is 27 pages long and can be read online or downloaded for FREE from either Issuu or Sribd (it's about 6.5Meg).

The units have loads of character, remember these guys are the original mercenaries for hire, they've been lobbing off head and limbs for longer than some of the other races have even been around and they're still here to tell their tales !

You've got to love some of the fluff like the graffiti Notlob's crew write on the side of their bolts "'Notlob does it from 300 feet' and 'Chew on this Stuntie'", the Battle Cries and weaponry such as "Pulp the Stunties", "Mark your target well and eat it". and the "Dwarf Tickler" cleaver - I like anything anti-Dwarf - you may have noticed ;-)

It's also nice the way some of the unit's histories are connected, such as Golfgag's betrayal of Bodgan's battle chariots and Notlob's misunderstanding with Harboth. There are a few entertaining short stories dotted about the expansion and the presentation is, as always, top notch throughout.

There's a handy summary matrix in the For Hire section at the back showing you who can fight in which armies and which allocation they should be drawn from (ie. Core, Special or Rare)

Happy Reading.

BTW, please join the Battle Reporter forum and feedback any comments or suggestions on any of the army books (we have individual forums for each one, click below for the index page).

Cult of Ulric Warhammer PDF - a new Fantasy Battle Army

$

0

A Warhammer 8th edition rules update to the Ulrican army from Games Workshop's Storm of Chaos supplement (originally written by Gav Thorpe, Pete Haines and Andy Hoare).

WFB Army Book PDFs - the Cult of Ulric
In this superbly presented, full colour, Ulrican army book you will find a rich and engaging background, culture, history and army list for the men of Middenland. In short, they are a deeply pious, hardy and warrior-like folk (who despise the weak !)*, as you would expect from those that stand firm against the tides of Chaos from the North (with a bit if help from their Empire friends and maybe a few unmentioned, wandering Nordic Huscarls).

* see the Crush the Weak in Army Special rules (a real benefit against low leadership armies such as Goblins and Skaven).

The book is 46 pages long, about 46meg to download (for FREE) or you can view it online (click the book cover for download links in the Battle Reporter forum).

Once again, Mathias (Battle Reporter forum member name M4cR1II3n) is the genius behind this impressive update - don't forget to drop him a personal message to say thanks or leave your feedback in the dedicated forum thread (click book cover).

The army list features:-
  • 10 Lord and Hero choices (including special characters and elector count Boris Todbringer himself who is quite hard to kill - you need him finish him off in one combat round before his wounds restore);
  • 3 core units including, of course, the Knights of the White Wolf;
  • 3 special units with a wide variety of optional upgrades and the heavily armed and armoured Montrous Winter Warg Knights and
  • 2 rare units including the Knights Panther and stubborn Wolfkin skirmishers.

Games Workshops Storm of Chaos book
In addition to the men from Middenland, you can also select from a wide variety of Empire Army troops, including some of the non-special characters, most of the Empire core, crossbowmen (as special) and most usefully Greatswords (as special) and the Great Cannon (as rare) along with the Mortar and Handgunners.

It's a wide selection to choose from and allows you to integrate the Middenheim army (Middenheim is the capital of Middenland)  on a piece by piece basis into an existing Empire force if you want to begin collecting it.

The Ulric army is predominantly an offensive one but there are enough units (with Empire included) to provide for all gaming styles. The true fighting strength will still lie with the Cult of Ulric units which have some advantages over their Empire equivalents (for instance, the Middenheim state troops "The Swords of Ulric" get +1 to hit in the first round of combat). The Teutogen Guard make for a useful and inexpensive special unit with their Ld 8 and Stubborn rule plus White Wolf Hammers, and full plate and (for one upgraded unit) the Strength of Ulric rule which allows re-rolls of failed to-wound dice.

Middenheim Knights Art

The cavalry deserves special mention because they are the very heart of the Cult of Ulric Middenland Army. Indeed an army (albeit, not a very balanced one) could probably be constructed of cavalry units alone because Knights of the White Wolf* are available as a core unit, the hardy Winter Warg Knights* as special and Knights Panther as a rare choice.

* both these units wield White Wolf Hammers (+1 strength in combat and +2 strength when charging) and full plate (4+ armour save). As you would expect from an army based near the boundaries of the human world and in constant struggle against the forces of Chaos, full plate armour and heavy hammers feature prominently throughout!

Warhammer Battle Wizards
Magic support comes in the form of Wizard Lords and  Battle Wizards, who can use spells from the 8 colleges of magic and Warrior Priests of Ulric who are extremely pious and enraged with hatred !

The Warrior Priests can channel power and dispel dice like a wizard, fill their own troops with hatred and have 3 prayers (bound level 3 augment spells targetting the priest and his unit). The Prayers either increase charge distance, deliver automatic hits on enemy combatants in base contact or cause enemy units in base contact to suffer -1 to hit.

Emil Valgeir is the High Priest of Ulric and a particularly useful character because he's far more likely to "get off" one of his bound prayers and handy for channeling extra dice (on a 5+ not just 6). Not only that but he's quite a nasty piece of of work in combat, 4 str5 attacks (ignoring armour saves),  the enemy strikes last and he has a 4+ armour save and 5+ ward save (+1 magic res). Don't think you can take him out with a flame cannon either because he and his unit are immune to all fire based attacks.

Ulric Warrior Warhammer Fantasy Battle army
Magic Items are represented by Talismans of Ulric and the Ulric Armoury, there are 15 items in total (plus any you include on characters from the Empire Army book. They're not that powerful but a nice addition to add some flavour to your custom characters.I particularly like the Bane of the Craven amulet which prevents pesky units, that like to disrupt your plans, from making a flee reaction to your charge. The Standard of the White Wolf will also ease some of the anxiety you can suffer when facing massed ranks of missile troops or ranged magic missiles, all of which suffer -1 to their strength. I think the Fang of the Winter Wolf will also prove popular in a last ditch attempt to win a combat. It can be used by a warrior priest and effectively ensures that his prayer is "cast" with Irresistible Force.

Is army is for you...

Well, if you're a fan of The Empire army book but you are getting a bit bored of playing with the same units and crave a bit more variety or, if you want to inject a bit more warrior spirit into the army or, branch out into a new theme with new heraldry and white winter bases then this could be your opportunity.

It's would be quite easy to add your favourite Ulric units one at a time and, I guess, that's the beauty of this supplement. You can add piecemeal and easily revert back to your core Empire force or go the whole hog and build up your Middenlanders into a full army in it's own right with a small Empire contingent.

You can still find some of the old White Wolf Knights on eBay (click below) although they are long out of production. GW do however still sell the Empire Grand Master of the White Wolf in Finecast, which is quite a handsome mini to own and a decent center piece for your knights if you decide to go for it Knights of the White Wolf on eBay

To summarize

Fantasy Battle Wolf Kin unit
What I like - the warrior-like, gritty, determined, independent minded character of the army and it's leaders. The Cult itself really brings the army to life, they feel a bit like the bad guys in the Conan the Barbarian movie - heavily armed and armoured, resolute, a bit scary and tough to kill.

I also like the way you can combine the army with an existing Empire army giving you two forces for the price of one. Building a Cult of Ulric force should prove a lot less expensive for Empire players than collecting a totally new army. It will feel similar on the battlefield to play but should inject enough variety to pique your interest for many more battles. It's also a nice excuse to buy and paint just a few new miniatures without having to empty your wallet on a whole army.

Warhammer Winter Wargs
What I dislike - nothing major really. It's a very well constructed supplement and a good read. I think it would have been nice if there had been a nod in the direction of the people of Nordland which borders Middenland to the North. Maybe just a little Nordic influence in a unit or two, they must surely share some form of alliance against Chaos. The problem is that the Norse do not have an official army book and don't really exist in Games Workshop's vision anymore so the update would have strayed quite a bit from the original supplement.

All in all, a job well done by Mathias and an excellent 8th edition update - Many thanks Mathias. Please let him know you appreciate his efforts in the Battle Reporter Forum.

For Lord of the Rings fans

The LoTR trilogy (the books not the game) is, I suspect, the reason many of us old timers got into Warhammer Fantasy in the first place. I suspect the LoTR films were the reason many others joined us a few years later.

Anyway, if you still long for Middle Earth adventures and hark back to the innocence of it all, you might just like this...

Warhammer Army Book PDF update - Araby

The Araby (unofficial) Fantasy Battle Army book has been updated.

WFB Army PDF - Araby
Mathias has been beavering away again (does he ever stop !?) This time he's really gone to town on the presentation (check out the excellent new in-book fonts) and it really does look incredible. It's a professional production and could be sold alongside all the other official army books but for you... it's FREE so what are you waiting for ?

This army is completely unofficial and is not endorsed by Games Workshop!

The army book is now almost full colour and to be frank, I've been having trouble deciding which images to include in this blog post because it all looks so good.

You'd be insane not to download and at least flick through this book (just click the army book cover). It's all completely free with absolutely no catches.  Some feedback in the forum would be nice but is totally optional:-

Araby Army feedback and comments

Warhammer Fantasy Araby Army
"...This takes care of some more issues with statlines in the army list and reference section, adds a bunch of new artwork and a little bit of fluff. Finally found a decent pic for the Mamelukes too, been looking for that for ages! Wizards also have access to the Lore of Shadow, and the Hashishin and Al Thair now have a 4+ ward save to be more in line with Skaven Assassins, both points and rules-wise.

The book is starting to look really pretty now I must say, and hopefully this will be the last update in quite a while as well, I do have other books to work on!"
(Mathias)

Check out this 2 page spread, how cool is that !
Warhammer Araby Army book art

Arab Army Book for Fantasy Battle
A quick side by side review of the books and army bestiaries tells me....

Small tweaks to the Lore of the Desert and Artefacts of the assassin's creed. Numerous enhancements to the Treasures of the Sands (magical items) which thankfully still includes the awesome Bow of Seeking (previously Ebony Bow) - Str5 automatic hits causing d3 wounds !  Death from afar :-)

The Greater and Lesser Genies are now characters in their own right and represented as Monstrous Infantry as opposed to mounts.

New Rare Units include Bladedancers, the Dervishers and the Sandglass of Time.

Bladedancers are the daughters of the Sultan's Harem and they make a deadly elite unit. Boasting a move of 5, four str4 attacks, 2 wounds, Ld8 and a 5+ ward they will best a lot of units although they can only be deployed in units of up to 5 so are to be used with care (ie not against large rank and file formations). Also, at 60pts a piece you won't want to take too many and put all your eggs in one basket - at least I wouldn't.

Army of Araby

Warhammer War Elephant
War Elephants, Flying Carpets and Camels all still feature in the army. These units along with the Genies, Bedouin's and Whirling Dervishers really help to make this army a very unique and, dare I say it, realistic feeling force. No unit has been conjured up out of thin-air, except for the genies ;-), they all have a firm mythical or real-life footing. For some reason it makes the army feel a bit more accessible to my mind.

Araby has more of an Empire, Bretonnia feel than some of the more extravagant, fantastical armies such as Lizardmen, Skaven and Daemons. So, as such, this army will not appeal to those players who are into WFB for the outrageous fantasy elements. It will however please many who prefer a more human-like "The Thief of Baghdad", "Prince of Persia" quality.

Arabic Warhammer Dervisher

Anyway, my favourite units have to the Carpet Rider (come on who didn't fantasize about that when lying in bed after watching The Thief of Baghdad as a kid ?), the Bladedancers, chicks who can beat up Ogres ! (actually, if you like that concept too, check out the Amazonians) and here's my number one... Whirling Dervishes.

The Dervishes have an unimpressive stat line (except they are fast movers, M5 and quick with a sword, Initiative 5). They do however have the Whirling Death rule - check it out, it's so awesome.

They are a bit of a suicide unit like Goblin Fanatics but you have more control if they completely pass through an enemy unit, ie. they can charge again. They are a devastating against low toughness units that are tightly packed together (such as the dastardly Skaven, Gobbos and Gnoblars).

Talking of Gnoblars, there's a Gnoblar Horde book on it's way !

Who would have thought that the Ogres would ever have let the Gnoblars off the leash long enough for them to form a whole army, or that the Gnoblars were smart enough to. You heard it hear first !

Winged Lancers coming to a Fantasy Battlefield near you soon - right now actually - duck !

Mathias has been busy with the people of Kislev and the Land of the Great Bear and presents to us another top quality army book.

This army is completely unofficial and is not endorsed by Games Workshop!

A quick review of the book reveals some very nice presentation changes with a superb new Russian style font, the ones with the "backward" R's (where he finds them, I know not !)

There is quite a bit of new artwork and a few army unit changes including new Lord and Hero level special characters (such as Miska the Slaughterer and Igor the Terrible) and some interesting sounding new units including the Kvassnics, Chekist, Armoured War Bear, Brotherhood of the Bear, Droyaska skirmishers and a new Lore of the Hags.

I haven't had time to give the book a decent read, only skimming through it, so I will leave that to you folks (click the book cover).

I have both pdfs open side-by-side and the new one certainly has more of the Icy Wastes feel to it. Hopefully one day, I will actually get time to not just read but use one of these armies on the field of battle !

Mathias asked me to tell you that most of the background is from Realm of the Ice Queen (and the original list was written by Tuomas Pirinen) and not written by Mathias.

Empire Knightly Orders Expansion PDF Review and links

An Empire Army book PDF expansion (unofficial) for  Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

The Empire Knightly Orders Army Book PDF
If you like the thought of charging highly disciplined (generally!), loyal (mostly!) Knights across the field of battle but are turned off by the Fleur de Lis and fancy raiment of a Bretonnian host then maybe something less Gallic and a lot more Teutonic may fulfill your needs for honour and glory.

This expansion is unofficial and not endorsed by Games Workshop!

Mathias brings us another of his awesome works (they now number 18 armies / expansions, with more in the pipeline! It's an amazing feat really, especially given the high production quality and balance of the armies and other Warhammer supplements).

Empire Knightly Order forum and download links
(PDF is 40 pages long and about 27meg)

21 Armies and WFB Supplements on the Battle Reporter forum.

Empire Knightly Orders Army

So you thought that the Brets and even the "bog standard" Empire army had their fair share of knights, errr.... think again ! The Knightly Orders consist of over 20 orders (mostly but not all mounted). Lots of players will be familiar with some of the orders which feature in the Empire book, some will have heard of other orders which have been covered by or mentioned in past Games Workshop literature.

Warhammer Fantasy Battle Knights
Mathias has created a Warhammer expansion for the Empire Army by compiling all of these orders in one place and produced a wonderfully engaging read, a shaky "alliance" of Knights with some supporting foot troops - you know, those common folk best avoided ;-).

It's easy to imagine this lot getting into a fierce banquet debate (with a deadly jousting event the next day to settle scores and see which order the gods really support :-)

There is a big nod in the direction of the deified Sigmar (hurray !), with the Hunters of Sigmar, Knights of the Twin-Tailed Orb, Knights of Sigmar's Blood and Knights of the Hammers of Sigmar.

Knightly Orders Artwork

The book also contains many Knights that I hadn't heard of before or had long since forgotten about. Some ring a distant bell so I assume they featured in earlier edition army books or supplements. All of them come with intriguing names :-
  • Knights of the Ever Lasting Light - immune to fear and terror with 5+ ward but also cursed !
  • Knights of the Raven - hate undead, immune to fear and terror - very handy VC and TKs
  • Knights of the Verdant Field - forest striders, skirmishers, scouts with long bows
  • Knights of the Broken Sword - with questionable discipline
  • Knights of the Sacred Scythe - killing blow vs Vampires but untrusted by own army
  • Knights Encarmine - parry or two hand weapons but disorderly with no rank bonuses
  • Knights of the Fiery Heart - Hate goblins
  • Knights of the Black Rose - stubborn if joined by general but distrusted by nearby "friends"
  • Knights of the Black Lynx - full plate, halberd foot troops
I reckon that list alone should be sufficient to whet your appetite. So what are you waiting for ? Enjoy.

Warhammer Battle Recorder website

A NEW (unofficial) Warhammer website for assessing your battle performance and that of all the Fantasy Battle Armies

Hi folks, I have been beavering away on a WFB project in recent weeks to try to boost membership of the Battle Reporter forum and to learn some new programming skills.

I have come up with a website that's just about ready for testing although I have quite a few other features I'd like to add before it goes live (see "To be added" footnote).

Note: this is a Battle Reporter Forum members only site - so please join us*

* the whole point of the project is to boost membership before the forum dies. Membership, like 99% of all forums, is completely free and there are no catches whatsoever - we just want a few more people in our dwindling community that we have spent 5 years trying to grow!  PS. The forum is a really friendly place to be, we don't suffer people who want to pick a fight or wind other members up. If you're one of those people then please DON'T read on.

If you would like to help test the website (by adding "pretend" battles) then please join the forum and post in the forum link below and I will send you a forum message with your password and username (which will be the same as your forum member name):-

I want to help test Sigmar's Battle Recording Website.

So far, the website will...
  • Add Battle - record friendly and tournament battles of any size for all armies and collect various "battle data" and analyze the performance by Army vs Army (wins, draws, losses) and user.

I have added a few pages for various reports which include:-
  • Armies Vs - How each army performs against each other army, detailed by individual armies and summarized in an Army vs Army matrix.

Free Warhammer Fantasy Battle supplement PDF
Mathias has been hard at work again with this superbly realized WFB Supplement that is free to download or view online (click the army book cover for links).

The characters have all been loving brought back to life or "undeath" from 6th edition and prior Warhammer publications so some of them are pretty ancient (and very expensive if you're looking for the models on eBay, except for the Orcs & Gobbos which always seem quite cheap ?!)

For the "eBayers" among you :-

Dark Elves - Rakarth
Dwarfs - Grombrindal
High Elf Queen Alarielle
Vampire Queen Neferata
Vampire Counts - Dieter Helsnicht
Warriors of Chaos - Egrimm van Horstmann
Wood Elves - Durthu the Treeman

Before I go on, Mathias wanted me to point out that characters which have been updated in his other army books (eg. Dogs of War, Kislev, Cult of Ulric etc) are not part of the Special Characters supplement - yet !

As you can see, there are quite a few characters to check out, I haven't gone through them all in detail, I'll leave that to you. Some of the Dwarf lords and heroes certainly bring back memories - bad ones for me !

From what I've seen the points values look reasonable although personally I'm not really happy with anybody bringing rock hard characters to any battle below 3000pts (which I haven't played for a very long time !)

Most of the characters are not of the "uber" level in any case (except the Daemons) so they should be fair game for inclusion in your army if you're looking for some fresh leadership and a change in tactics or just an excuse to paint some new minis.

Add it to your Warhammer downloads, it's well worth a read.

Post your Special Characters Supplement feedback and comments here

BTW, I had a right laugh over some of the old names like Lotl-Botl and Inxi-Huinzi (I'm sure there used to be a "Teeny Weeny" too, Tuini Huini maybe ?) Most of the Orc and Goblin names hit the nail on the head... Facebeater, Eadsplitta, Rotgut, Necksnapper and, lol, Odd Git.

Warriors of Chaos Close Up Video by Games Workshop

GW releases an excellent close inspection YouTube video of the new Warriors of Chaos minis.

Image of Chaos Warrior Lord
The video does a superb job of showing all the new miniatures and model kits in 360 and zooms in on some of the detail. You get a much clearer picture and feel for the models than looking at a 2D image. It's quite an impressive showcase played to a "impending doom" sound track, a few galloping horses, battle cries and eerie satanic-like whispers ! Muahaha.

Featuring:-
  • Slaughterbrute
  • Mutalith Vortex Beast
  • Dragon Ogres
  • Forsaken
  • Chaos Chariot
  • Gorebeast Chariot
  • Chaos Lord
  • Vilitch the Curseling
  • Throgg
  • Battle Magic Cards
  • Warriors of Chaos Army book cover

Well done Games Workshop, let's see one of these videos for all future releases please.

NEW Nippon Warhammer Army Book - Free PDF

A comprehensive update of the Nippon Warhammer Fantasy Battle Army for 8th Edition rules.

Nippon Army Book Cover - PDF download
This army is completely unofficial and is not endorsed by Games Workshop!

Mathias has just released a major revision of the Nippon Army book. This is a significant re-work of the army list and background fluff (click army book cover download and comment links).

One of the appealing reasons to play a Fantasy Battle Game with a Nippon army is that you can actually find Samurai and other suitable miniatures. If you;re really, really lucky you might even find some :-

out of production GW / Citadel Nippon minis on eBay.
(note: also try searching for "Oriental" and "Samurai")

Main changes (from Mathias' notes):-
  • A new history that combines Japanese creation myth and history with links to other races in the Warhammer World incl. Cathay, Dark Elves, Skaven, Marienburg and Chaos.
  • A new religion added to the Culture and Customs section.
  • A Land of Nippon section which is partly based on old WHFRP material and part written by Mathias.
  • All new Clans, based on 8 of the clans from Total War: Shogun II, to which Mathias has added his own background.
  • All Clan Mon are completely new.
  • A completely new Lore of the Kami.
  • All Special Characters are new or returning from the 7th edition list.
  • Sumo Warriors, Ronin, Red Devils and Kabuki Dolls are back.
  • New units: Yamabushi, Wako Pirates, Great Guard, Yabusame, Battle Maidens.
  • Increased casting value for Borne on the Wind.
  • Mikoshi Shrine can now give blessing to all units.
  • Fan of Command is now one use only, 35 pts.
  • Clan Mon are now priced individually per model.
* All Legend of the Five Rings units, characters and references removed (except some artwork).

Sigmar's Nippon Review

Summary: 102 pages, 30 meg PDF (or can be viewed online), 8th edition rules compliant.
The rich history, mythology and warrior-centric culture makes Nippon is an excellent candidate for a Warhammer Fantasy Army. The first thing which struck me about the book is the excellent use of artwork that makes this book look very unique and emphatically Nipponese. I'm used to Mathias' superb presentation skills now but, in my opinion, this is one of his best. The attention to detail is notable in the use of fonts, Japanese characters, unit profile and other coloured box-outs and nice touches like the coloured clan icons which break up the pages and make the book a pleasure to read.

So what's in the book...

Nippon Army Samurai Artwork
It starts with the History of Nippon, from it's founding, the rise of the Samurai, it's various wars (including the Hobgoblin invasion, Chaos Incursions, Cathay conflict and internal strife) through to the arrival of gunpowder and the present day. The detailed and varied history should provide you with just cause for fielding the army in games against several other Warhammer races.

Following the history, which concludes with the customary timeline, the book moves onto Culture and Customs. This section details all of the society's hierarchy, religion and rituals and most importantly the "Tenets of Bushido" - which I recommend you memorise and follow to the letter if you plan to take this honourable army into battle - note that ritual suicide may be required if you suffer a shameful massacre ;-)

The book then moves onto the Clans and the Land of Nippon (beginning with a map of the islands). The clans should provide you with a bit of inspiration for customising your army and the lands section should be useful if you want to create some themed terrain and scenery and maybe for basing your miniatures. In fact, if you're a keen modeler and scenery designer, the very distinctive buildings and structures should give you a great excuse for experimentation and having a bit of fun.

The business end of the book (always my favourite part) is where the Bestiary begins. Nippon starts with the Army Special rules and there are 6 very imaginatively and appropriately thought out ideas. Reading these special rules alone will give you a taste of how well designed the army is. So here goes...

    Way of the Warrior
    - units with this rule must always accept challenges although they benefit from being able to re-roll failed psychology tests and ignore panic caused by units without the rule.
    Kenjutsu
    - unsaved wounds on the enemy can immediately be followed up by an additional attack (the extra attack does not benefit from the Kenjutsu rule)
    Death Before Dishonour
    - if a unit with this rule breaks from combat it may perform seppuku, that is, the whole unit will commit suicide thus denying the enemy a pursuit or overrun move and preventing panic from spreading throughout the Nippon army.
    Katana
    - a hand weapon that can be used as a 2 handed weapon that grants +1 to wound
    Sashimonos
    - small banners worn by Nipponese soldiers in combat for identification purposes. These banners proffer onto the unit a +1 rank bonus for Steadfast and Combat Resolution (up to +4)
    Horo Cloaks
    - Stiffened cloaks of finely woven silk that reduce the Strength of shooting attacks by 1

Do you see what I mean? I think they're pretty impressive. The fluff accompanying the rules make them sound absolutely perfect for a Nipponese army without having any detrimental impact on the "battlefield balance" of the army.

Nippon Army Samurai Cavalry Artwork

I'm going to leave the review at that, I think I've given you enough reason to have a look at the book yourself so I'll just finish with a quick summary of my thoughts and the army selection list.

Overall, I'll just say that while I haven't tried assembling any army lists my initial impressions are that the army benefits from:-
...a (generally) higher than average Leadership (mostly 8, although many core units are 6); a wide variety of cheap foot and cavalry troops that should allow for a choice of tactics (not dissimilar to The Empire); and some unusual special and rare units than add some combat support and ranged offensive in the form of war machines. I haven't delved into the magic, poisons or the clan system in any depth, I'll leave that to you folks.
The drawbacks, as with all human armies:-
     ...toughness 3 !

Nippon Army Book Geisha Art
A quick Summary of the Nippon Army list
  • A unique spell Lore, 10 magical artefacts, 8 clans and 9 poisons.
  • 4 Lords, 9 Heroes,
  • 5 Core units - including the Samurai of course (who are not as powerful as you may suspect, although they do have a useful Ld8, Ws4 and the special rules noted above)
  • 10 Special units - including Ninjas, Warrior Monks and the unstoppable Sumo (that can force a break test re-roll in the 1st round of combat following their charge).
  • 6 Rare units - including the Great Guard (devastating Monstrous Cavalry), a Mangonel, the Flaming Arrow (a cannon), the Kitsune (a useful ethereal) and the Mikoshi Shrine (which grants blessings on nearby units).

Enjoy the book.  Thanks for reading.  BTW, please don't forget to leave some feedback in the forum.
